These days, cannabis products are becoming more and more popular among the general public. With new laws, regulations and a well-informed society, many are able to distinguish the differences between CBD and recreational marijuana. However, the world of cannabis isn’t always so easy to navigate. Many brands want to get in on the popular CBD market, advertising their products with much of the same lingo and ingredients as CBD oil. The terms used to describe cannabis, hemp plants, hemp oil and CBD are often used interchangeably, creating confusion among many customers. So how can you tell whether a product is truly CBD oil?
CBD oil is a term that describes the oil from specific strains of hemp plants that are bred to be high in CBD content. It is extracted from the leaves, flowers and stalks of the plant, with varying degrees of quality depending on the extraction method (carbon dioxide, steam distillation, or hydrocarbon or natural solvents). CBD oil contains cannabidiol (known as CBD), one of over a hundred active cannabinoids that are found exclusively in cannabis.
CBD oil is generally taken as a supplement in a tincture or capsule form for medicinal purposes, which acts as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It contains active cannabinoids that can reduce pain and inflammation, and has been used for centuries to successfully provide pain relief.
On the other hand, hemp seed oil contains no active CBD. Often named as a “superfood”, it’s derived specifically from the hemp plant. Hemp plants are a form of cannabis sativa that is typically grown for industrial purposes, containing low levels of CBD and THC. Through a process called cold-pressing, the hemp oil maintains the integrity and pureness of the seed oil. Similar to other carrier oils such as sunflower seed oil, this method is used to preserve much of the raw nutrients. Unlike CBD oil, it does not contain any CBD or other cannabinoids such as THC.
However, there are still a number of different reasons why hemp seed oil can be great for you. It can be easily added into food as a vitamin supplement due to its high level of vitamins, fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6, proteins and antioxidants. Hemp seed oil is also found in shampoos, lotions, soaps and other beauty products around the world.
Why it’s important to know the difference
Although they are both wellness products, customers should still know the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil. Many brands will make false claims that their products contain CBD when they contain none, and continue to mislead consumers by using certain terms interchangeably. The two products may come from the same plant, but they contain significantly different benefits! If you’re looking to purchase a CBD product, always remember to check the label.
